Money on the road in 2026: Wise, Revolut and N26 put to the test

Which account to get paid into, which to spend abroad with, and why you should always carry a backup card. An honest comparison for nomads.

Money on the road in 2026: Wise, Revolut and N26 put to the test

If you have been travelling for a while, you know money causes more scares than flights: a card blocked on a Sunday, a hidden exchange fee or an ATM charging 8 € to withdraw 100. We compared the three apps Zabelers use most. Terms change often, so always check each provider's current pricing before deciding.

The key idea: don't look for "the best bank", build a system

No digital bank is perfect. What works is combining an account to get paid, a main card to spend and a backup card from another provider, kept somewhere else in your bag.

Wise: the queen of getting paid and exchanging currency

Best bits

  • Local account details in several currencies (euros, dollars, pounds and more): clients pay you as if you were local.
  • Currency exchange at the real rate with a visible, transparent fee.
  • Very useful for freelancers invoicing abroad.

Watch out for

  • It is not a traditional bank everywhere; check how your funds are protected where you live.
  • Free ATM withdrawals have a monthly limit.

Revolut: the Swiss army knife for spending on the road

Best bits

  • Very complete app: virtual cards, instant freeze, spending controls and shared accounts.
  • Paying in other currencies is usually cheap on weekdays.

Watch out for

  • Weekends often carry an extra exchange markup: exchange before Friday.
  • Free plans have exchange and ATM limits; above them you pay fees.

N26: simplicity and a full European account

Best bits

  • Bank with a European licence and its own IBAN, handy for direct debits.
  • Clean, easy app, ideal if you want simplicity.

Watch out for

  • Only available to residents of certain countries.
  • ATM withdrawals outside the eurozone may cost money depending on the plan.

Our recommended kit

  • To get paid by international clients: Wise.
  • For daily spending: Revolut or the Wise card.
  • Backup: a card from another provider (your usual bank or N26), kept separately.
  • Always: decline "conversion to your currency" at ATMs and card terminals; pay in local currency.

FAQ

Can I have all three?

Yes, and many nomads do. Opening them is free on basic plans.

What if my card gets blocked?

That is what the backup card is for. Also keep support numbers written down outside your phone.
